This pair of mid-sized scooters are designed for the urban mobility segment with both carrying the same engine and are directly manufactured by BMW Motorrad in its China plant. Power comes from a 350 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder with overhead cam and four-valves, producing 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Power gets to the ground via a CVT gearbox and gear-driven final drive, reducing maintenance, while fuel consumption is claimed to be litres per 100 km. Braking on the C 400 is done by 265 mm double-discs with four-piston hydraulic callipers in front and a single 265 mm diameter disc in the rear, clamped by a single-piston floating calliper. BMW Motorrad two-channel ABS is standard, as is automatic stability control ASC. Wheel sizing is 15 inches in front and 14 inches in the back, suspended with 35 mm diameter telescopic forks and the rear end uses twin shock absorbers. Seat height for the C 400 is set at 775 mm while weight is claimed to be 204 kg for the C 400 X and 212 kg for the C 400 GT, in ride away trim. Under the seat, the compartment is big enough to accommodate one full-face and one open-face helmet, while two smaller storage compartments in the dashboard hold miscellaneous items. Rider conveniences include a full-colour TFT-LCD display, BMW Keyless Ride and BMW Motorrad Connectivity – which comes standard – connects the C 400 to the rider’s smartphone. Colour options are Blackstorm Metallic, Moonwalk Grey Metallic and Alpine White for the 2019 BMW Motorrad C 400 GT while the BMW Motorrad C 400 X comes in Zenith Blue Metallic, Alpine White and Black Storm Metallic. The large asymmetric LED headlight also equips the New BMW C400 X, along with the Daytime Running Light – now available as standard to the model. C400 GT Meanwhile, the BMW C400 GT also arrives with LED lighting technology and can be instantly identified by the aerodynamically designed twin LED headlight with now-standard Daytime Running Light. The ergonomically designed seat guarantees a comfortable as well as confident seating position. Featuring a separate rider backrest and integrated footboards, the New BMW C400 GT also retains its high windshield for everyday practicality and touring suitability. The storage concept with Flexcase now features optimised lighting under the seat bench for both the new models to improve comfort significantly. New lighting The lighting now illuminates from above, instead of the sides, for even better clarity. In addition to the 12-volt onboard socket, the front right storage compartment is now equipped with a USB charging socket as well. Both models are powered by an efficiency-optimised single-cylinder engine with a capacity of 350cc as the drive unit. Powertrain The engine outputs 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm peak torque at 5,750 rpm. The models employ power transmission through a Continuously Variable Transmission CVT gearbox including a torsional drivetrain swing arm with minimum vibration. The engine is now equipped with an electronic throttle grip, or known as the E-gas, and an electrically-operated throttle valve. Further optimisations include a modified matrix and coating of the catalytic converter, a wideband oxygen sensor, modifications to the cylinder head, a new sensor on the generator cover, an adapted wiring harness and modified idle speed control. Further optimisation The idle speed regulator in the airbox has been omitted and the idle speed control is now carried out via a throttle valve bypass and a turbulence system. Safety is also offered via the newly-optimised Automatic Stability Control ASC that now features automatic radius calibration and increased regulation quality – giving the vehicles a more sensitive response, especially on wet and slippery surfaces. Deactivating the ASC is now no longer necessary as well. Suspension and damping continue to be managed by a telescopic fork at the front and two spring struts at the rear. New brakes The brake system of the New BMW C400 X and BMW C400 GT are now revised with new brake calipers. The double-disc brake system at the front now offers a more stable and clearly defined pressure point, as well as improved roll-back behaviour of the brake pistons. This is accompanied by aligned lever travels for the rear brake on the left and the front brake on the right for a symmetrical braking feel. Both continue to be fitted with Anti-lock Brake System ABS as standard. New instrument cluster Both models are also equipped with an instrument cluster in the form of a full-colour TFT screen. Effortless navigation by means of arrow-based navigation is also available through the BMW Motorrad Connected App. The advanced Keyless Ride feature now equips both models as standard, offering transponder activation for the steering lock, ignition, fuel-filler flap and anti-theft device, all in one vehicle key. Colour options The New BMW C400 X is available exclusively in the new Black Storm Style Triple Black, while the New BMW C400 GT arrives in three paint finishes – the new Black Storm Style Triple Black, Callisto Grey, and Alpine White. Pricing is set at RM44,500 for the C400X while the C400GT is tagged at RM48,500, with all prices listed as on-the-road without insurance. More improvements come in the form of ride-by-wire throttle, dubbed “E-gas” by BMW Motorrad, for idling stability, combined with a throttle valve bypass and turbulence system. Engine changes to meet emissions regulations include a modified catalytic convertor, wideband oxygen sensor, modifications to the cylinder head and adapted wiring harness. Revisions have also been made to the C400s centrifugal clutch to reduce clutch and improve response when the throttle is opened. A combination of increased spring force and slightly raised engine speed when the clutch re-engages, with tolerances reduced to compress the spread of engine speed, are responsible for the better performance. No changes in the power figures for the C400, the single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, four-valve, OHC mill putting out 34 hp at 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. The C400s Automatic Stability Control has also been revised to handle slippery road surfaces while the brake levers have now been calibrated to provide identical lever travel along with more feedback from the new twin front brake callipers. 2021 BMW Motorrad C400GT Now available as standard in BMW Connectivity which together with the BMW Connected app allows the rider to access functions on the C400.
